Phil Davis defeats Vinny Magalhaes by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)
by Jack Broadey @J3cK_bBoth men talked a lot in the build up to this one but the fight itself left a lot to be desired. Going into the fight the whole MMA world knew the key to Magalhaes winning this fight was his ability to take this fight to the ground. Whether that be a trip or even pulling guard to execute his outstanding Jiu Jitsu game.
Davis stifled him brilliantly but was clearly petrified of getting into a grappling match with Vinny so boxed beautifully from the outside and kept distance very well. He was in and out of range all night landing his combos then taking evasive action to get out again. He executed his gameplan superbly.
Magalhaes really struggled to implement his game plan and couldn't get close enough to Davis for his game to be effective. He briefly had Davis back but an uncharacteristic mistake let Davis of the hook. It wasn't the best fight in the world from either guy but Davis did what he had to do to nullify a world class Jiu Jitsu exponent and will move on a step closer to getting back towards the top of the division.
